Overview

Perfect for growing up fences, trellises, walls, archways and obelisks, Clematis viticella Rubra has a vigorous climbing habit that creates an eye catching display of beautiful flowers. The flowers are bell shaped, velvety in texture and wine red in colour. Each flower measures approximately 5-7cm and an abundance of them will appear from July to September. Clematis viticella Rubra is a deciduous perennial and will have a dormant period in winter before bursting back to life each spring. It is hardy against cold winter temperatures but will benefit from mulching in late autumn to offer the roots some extra protection. Please Note: When purchasing plants please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only - The plant will be supplied in a growers pot. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves. Characteristics: A deciduous climbing perennial plant with dark green leaves and small bell shaped velvety flowers in a striking wine red hue. Growth and Spread: Ultimate growth of up to 4m and spread of up to 2.5m. Care and Maintenance: Plant in full sun or partial shade, in soil that's moist but well-drained. Hard prune in February or March to encourage fresh growth in spring. Generally low maintenance and easy to care for. Period of Interest: Dark green foliage emerges in spring. Red flowers from mid summer to early autumn. Top Tip: Clematis likes its roots kept cool so plant alongside low growing plants to provide extra shade.
